Safe Shower System Components
01 SAFE SHOWER HOSPITAL
Safety
Electrical: Low voltage V12 prevents risk of electric shock to the user. Nevertheless, it is necessary to ensure no electrical current passes into the water and to obtain approval from the local electrical engineer.
Burns: The system has no heating element, therefore there is no risk of burns from operation.
Chemicals: The UV-based disinfection unit does not use any disinfectants, and no chemicals are added to the water.
Maintenance
• The UVC Led lamp lasts at least 5 years under normal use.
• The pump is designed to operate for at least 5 years under normal use.
• Water pipes and connectors are designed to last at least 8 years under normal use.
• The special silicone valves in the showerhead are designed to last at least 6 months. Upon purchase, the company commits to supplying replacement valves for one year at no additional cost.
• Full warranty on the entire product for one year, with the option for extended full service at a fixed monthly cost.
Environmental Conditions
• Ambient temperature: 4–55 °C.
• Water source: Required turbidity < 1 NTU.
• Electrical power supply: V12 source.
General Description of the Problem and Solution
Problem:
Institutions and public buildings are required to regularly flush water to prevent bacterial growth in showerheads, and to maintain very hot water (55 °C) in the piping due to the risk of Legionella bacteria. Reducing the risk at the endpoint can significantly save on flushing and disinfection costs.
Hospitals and hotels are required to test shower water for Legionella. If the concentration exceeds the permitted level, the institution must undergo an expensive process that may cause lost maintenance time, lawsuits, temporary closure of the institution/department, or patient evacuation.
Proposed Pilot Solution:
For continuous disinfection of endpoints, Safe Shower’s patented solution seals the endpoint against air entry using check-valves, allowing stagnant water to be continuously disinfected with a UVC LED unit.
This invention enables disinfection units to operate effectively where they could not before. By preventing air entry, the disinfection unit can work continuously, simply, and intelligently.
When air entry into the showerhead is blocked as water flow stops (via mini silicone valves), aerosol exposure to Legionella is minimized, chlorine oxidation is reduced, and limescale/organic deposits are prevented.
Assumptions for use
• Average shower use: ~10 minutes per day.
• Remaining water volume in the pipe (from the mixer to the tap outlet): ~1 liter (max).
• The NSF-approved disinfection unit can disinfect 8 liters per minute.
• Therefore, the disinfection rate is set at 8 liters/min.
• The disinfection system with circulation pump operate 2 minutes evry 2 houers 2 liters/min automatically, without user intervention - can be changed.
• The controller is programmed to schedule disinfection for 2 minutes evry 2 houers.
Target Audience
Water engineers or maintenance managers in hospitals, hotels, nursing homes, hostels and guesthouses.
